College Admission Kudos for Hannah Matin '19
For CDS seniors, this spring has been the season of college acceptances. Students are narrowing their choices, figuring out financial and logistical details for each, and trying to hone in on their hearts' desires for the next step in their educational journey. Each student is different and so are the criteria for each choice.

Today we celebrate CDS senior, Hannah Matin, who as an academic achiever has received acceptances to her top two choices: Columbia University and Duke University. As if those choices weren't spectacular enough, she has also been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill and University of Virginia. In addition to an offer from UNC Chapel Hill to be in the EXCELerated Research program, the school has offered her a $5,000 research award "to conduct mentored research" during the summer. According to their website, "The EXCELerated Research program brings together students with wide ranging interests in a community based on research, scholarship, and inquiry-driven learning. This program enables them to build their problem-solving, critical thinking, and project management skills.

EXCELerated research is for creative thinkers in all disciplines:

Problem-solving is a valuable skill in every field, and past research projects have spanned areas as diverse as:
  • Creative writing
  • Performing arts
  • International micro-finance and globalization
  • Genomics and nano-manipulation

Hannah's choices may seem overwhelming, but in typical fashion for the clear-thinking senior, she will consider each school carefully, including on campus visits to delve more deeply into campus and academic life.

Hannah's mom remarked on the CDS college counseling experience: "I cannot thank you enough for guiding us through this process. It was a whole different ballgame back when Mike and I went to college. The Upper School at Carolina Day has such a great outlook on college admissions. I appreciate that you encouraged Hannah to strive, but prepared her for the possible outcomes, positive or negative, at schools that nowadays have absurd levels of competition." —Carol Howard Matin

Hannah is also a strong student-athlete, and was recently honored with an All-WNC Honorable Mention for her swimming performance.

Congratulations, Hannah!
