It's not just Pre-K monarchs who journey across campus at Carolina Day School. Each year, Sue Ellen Sims’ English class brings Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to life as they travel through campus dressed in period costume, sharing stories along the way.

Mrs. Sims first led Carolina Day School seniors on the CDS Canterbury Pilgrimage in 1993, and the event has since become one of the most anticipated traditions for students. As part of the Canterbury Tales study in her Literature class, she uses the pilgrimage as the unit's main assessment. She divides the students up into groups and tasks, each presenting a tale to fellow students in any creative method they choose. Performances planning requires that students delve into the literature and analyze the tales from various points of view, which immerses them in the stories for deeper learning.
