Two CDS Juniors Selected for Governor's School of North Carolina

Carolina Day School juniors Sarah Holt and Hannah Matin have been accepted into the Governor’s School of North Carolina, the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. Only 35% of nominees are selected each year.

Sarah was nominated for Theater and Hannah for English. During Governor’s School, students complete an intense study of the field in which they were nominated and attend classes that encourage group discussion of practical applications of theory. Students have the opportunity to learn from speakers, performances, exhibitions, field trips, demonstrations, seminars, and film series.

The Governor's School integrates academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses: Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem (begun in 1963), and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh (begun in 1978).

The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division.
