Emily Crawford '18 Signs to Division I Soccer

The Carolina Day School community gathered on campus to celebrate NCAA Division I recruit Emily Crawford ’18, who has signed to play soccer with Western Carolina University. Crawford is a four-time state basketball champion, with All-Conference and All-WNC honors in soccer.

“Emily Crawford is a competitor—she is relentless,” said Steve Henry, CDS Director of Athletics. “Solidly built on the foundation of grit and perseverance, her willingness to compete, whether against herself, as she battled back from injury; or in the classroom, where she tackled new concepts; or with friends, as she fostered a let’s-do-this attitude, is certainly notable. It is this ferociousness—this desire to compete—which will sustain her as she enters the world of NCAA Division I athletics.”

“Last year proved to be the ultimate test for her, as she went down with a season-ending injury,” said Margot Moses, Assistant Coach and Crawford’s longtime advisor. “For many players, this would have been time to step aside and lose focus. Not for Emily. She chose to take on a new type of leadership role, stepping up her mentoring of the younger players. Her ability to adapt and adjust when things don’t quite go her way truly demonstrates her perseverance.”

Her other coaches also note Crawford’s perseverance. “Emily has always displayed such a genuine work ethic and desire to improve as both a player and a person,” said Joey Sasvari, Assistant Director of Coaching and College Coordinator. Anthony Brenner, CDS Varsity Girls Soccer Coach noted, “There are only a handful of players that will forever leave a mark on you as a coach and as a person. In many cases, you can’t explain why—you just know that you are better at what you do because of the time spent with this player. Emily Crawford is one of those very few for me.”

Of her decision to sign with Western Carolina University, Crawford said, "I’m excited about the opportunity to play at the next level and start with what seems to be a close-knit, family-oriented team.”
