Chris Champ ’18 Named National Merit Semifinalist
Becker Andry ’18 and Rion Tolchin ’18 recognized as Commended Students
Carolina Day School student Chris Champ ’18 has been named as a Semifinalist in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring students in each state on 2016 PSAT/NMSQT tests which they took as juniors. As a Semifinalist, Chris is now eligible to continue in the competition for scholarships and designation as a Merit Scholar®. Winners will be announced between May and July 2018.
“What motivates me is a desire for personal growth with a global mindset,” said Chris. “I really enjoy studying languages and cultures, and I feel it's very important to learn lessons from the cultures that I study, even recognizing that every culture has both positive and negative aspects. I'm hoping to further my study of languages and their relation to culture and modern global politics in college.”
Chris is heavily involved in school activities and has participated in Governor’s School of North Carolina, CDS Theatre, Academic Worldquest, CDS Literary Society, and tutoring CDS Lower School and Middle School students. Chris is actively involved in the CDS music program, plays piano, and is self-taught on guitar. She has been a competitive CDS Archery team member since Grade 7 and has served as Coach (junior and senior years) and Captain (senior year).
Becker Andry ’18 and Rion Tolchin ’18 received recognition as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students are eligible for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
