Carolina Day School sophomore, Matthew Schultz, was chosen out of a pool of outstanding high school students from across the nation to take part in the National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security, Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Defense. The forum, held in Washington, D.C. introduced students to future hand experiences and challenging career options in national security and related fields. Matthew heard national security speakers, including the Assistant Secretary of Department of Homeland Security. He also toured the Embassy of Saudi Arabia and participated in realistic simulation of a national security crisis.

The curriculum for the six-day forum is based on actual world events. Throughout the program, students developed critical thinking, leadership abilities, and public speaking skills to tackle the complexity of national decision-making in the face of a challenge, crisis, or conflict. Students also had the opportunity to meet with highly respected policy makers, military leaders, and other experts in the field.
