Carolina Day School (CDS) announced that, after a national search, Dr. John Daves will become the new principal of its upper school for grades 9-12. Daves, who will join CDS on July 1, 2019, succeeds Peggy Daniels, retiring at the end of the 2018-19 academic year after 34 years in education.

Carolina Day alumna Maggie Hilderbran '15 is one of 40 U.S. students to receive a 2019 Marshall Scholarship, and is one of only 32 recipients of the Two Year Marshall Scholarship. Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Hilderbran was selected from more than 1,000 other applicants in the nation.

This year's Book Fair, organized by the Parent Association's Friends of the Library, was a resounding success! The Library Book Fair is an annual tradition which supports the school's book clubs, guest authors, and the Caldecott and Newbery Awards.

Carolina Day School sophomores embarked on the annual CDS college trip November 11-14, visiting six schools of higher education in the Southeast. The Carolina Day School community gathered on campus to celebrate CDS swimmer Madeleine Bauer '19, who has signed with University of Michigan. As a swimmer for Carolina Day, Madeleine has been named to numerous all-conference teams, all-WNC swim teams, and has celebrated on the podium at Carolina Day's NCISAA Swim Championships.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, the weather may have been cold and rainy, but hearts were warm, as Carolina Day School students gathered on Jon Kraus Way with partner schools Asheville Christian Academy, Christ School, and the Franklin School of Innovation to celebrate the start of this year's Habitat for Humanity Student Build. The Truss Signing Celebration also recognized the partner family, Kerri Colloso and her family, who will move into the house when it is completed.

The Theater Department at Carolina Day School has much to celebrate, as they bring home honors from both the 2018 NCTC High School Play Festival, held at Gardner Webb University on November 2–3, 2018, and from the NCTC State High School Play Festival held at Greensboro College on November 15-16, 2018. The theater program, led by David Dvorscak, made the school and community proud with their presentations of "The Luxury of Silence" at the Festivals.

Brutal course conditions in Hendersonville couldn't stop the Carolina Day girls cross country team from taking home the NCISAA title on Friday, October 26, 2018. This win wrapped up the girls team's fifth consecutive state championship, and the Wildcat's 15th NCISAA victory in the last 25 years.

The Carolina Day School Creative Writers Club, a start-up idea conceived by a CDS Grade 5 student and her father, recently hosted author Amy Cherrix for a casual conversation about the process of writing. Amy Cherrix writes non-fiction for middle-grade readers.

On Thursday, April 26, Carolina Day upper school students participated in Arts Day workshops led by their peers and upper school faculty. With Art Workshops in the morning, a Gallery Opening at lunch, and a Showcase of Talent in the afternoon, Upper School Arts Day is a day in which students can explore new talents and push themselves artistically while gaining new skills.

For the past decade, Lycée Notre Dame in Dijon and Carolina Day School have fostered an exchange program between the two schools. On odd years, Carolina Day School students go to France, and on even years, the French students come here. Recently, the French students visited Carolina Day, this being the tenth year of the exchange program—the year in which the Lycée Notre Dame students come to Asheville.

Grade 4 teacher Jan Brabham has been invited to be a fellow at the Project Zero Classroom (PZC) Fellows Program, July 16-20, at Harvard's Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass. Educators attending this program will spend the week studying and networking with top professionals in education.

On Thursday, April 19, Carolina Day was host to HiTeck Tennis, a robot competition in which two robots compete against one another for the high score. Teams from Valley Springs Middle, TC Roberson High, and Carolina Day School competed.

Last year, Carolina Day School students worked with Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society and Wilde Acre Landscape to create a bird and pollinator-friendly garden. CDS Lower School Assistant Principal Peter Sullivan shared the story of how this garden has beautified the Carolina Day School campus and has transformed the space into an outdoor classroom, offering cross-curricular opportunities for learning.

Carolina Day School eighth-grader Cyrus Garretson was recently honored at a ceremony hosted by the 2018 Scholastic Art Awards of the WNC Region at the Diana Wortham Theater. His award-winning photograph "Wood Dome" earned him the American Institute of Architects Award.

This winter, after just over three years of practice, Solomon garnered honors at the National Field Archery Association's (NFAA) annual competition in Las Vegas and the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) State Championship held in Tennessee. Solomon took 6th place in Young Adult Male Recurve at the Vegas Shoot in February and 1st place-Guest, Cadet Male Recurve, in the USA Archery/JOAD TN State Championship on January 20, 2018.

On Saturday, February 24, 2018, the CDS girls' basketball team beat Asheville Christian Academy, 46-37, to win their eighth consecutive NCISAA 2A state championship, to continue a winning streak that continues to be the best in WNC girls' basketball history. This title gives Carolina Day its 10th in program history—the first WNC girls basketball team to ever reach double-digit championships.

Grade 8 students have been very busy researching the challenges that astronauts would face as we try to develop a long-term colony on planet Mars. In addition to their research, students have been creating 3-D models of their visions for their Mars settlements.

Carolina Day School was created 30 years ago from the confluence of two distinguished schools; St. Genevieve-Gibbons Hall and Asheville Country Day School. Carolina Day School invites WNC parents and educators to a free community forum called "Parenting with Identity in Mind" on October 5. The forum features nationally known professional diversity trainer and speaker Rosetta Lee and focuses on how we can instill positive self-identity in our children and coach them to be positive influences on others' identities.
