Carolina Day School seniors D'Angelo Elliott and Devin Elliott were recently chosen as members of the 2018-19 Carolinas Athletic Association All-Conference Boys Basketball Team. Carolina Day School seniors D'Angelo Elliott and Devin Elliott were recently chosen as members of the 2018-19 Carolinas Athletic Association All-Conference Boys Basketball Team. The Elliott brothers were two of ten young men selected from throughout the conference for this honor. Additionally, it was announced that D'Angelo Elliott has been chosen to represent the West team and Carolina Day School in the annual North Carolina Private School All-Star Game to be held in Charlotte on Saturday, March 2.

Carolina Day School senior Anna Kate Baechtold has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. With roughly less than 6% percent of nominees advancing to this level, she is among a distinguished group of seniors across the nation.

Congratulations to the following CDS students for being recognized in the WNC Regional Scholastic Art Awards, sponsored by The Asheville Art Museum with the assistance of its volunteer docents and with support from the Asheville Area Section of the American Institute of Architects. Students in grades 7–12 from all across our region submit work for this special juried competition.

In commemoration of the living legacy of Dr. King, CDS will host our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration with activities in each of our divisions. In addition, CDS students, faculty and staff, and community members will take part in Asheville-area events organized by the MLK Association of Asheville & Buncombe County.

Carolina Day School (CDS) announced that, after a national search, Dr. John Daves will become the new principal of its upper school for grades 9-12. Daves, who will join CDS on July 1, 2019, succeeds Peggy Daniels, retiring at the end of the 2018-19 academic year after 34 years in education.

During the last week of November, Carolina Day School was proud to be able to send faculty and staff—and for the first time, students—to the National Association of Independent Schools' (NAIS) Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) and the People of Color Conference (PoCC), held this year in Nashville, Tennessee.

Carolina Day School senior Adelaide Lammers has signed to row at Notre Dame next year. Adelaide will be the first Asheville Youth Rowing Association alum to attend and row at Notre Dame. The Wildcats held a signing ceremony on Wednesday, November 28, to celebrate the achievement.

Carolina Day School sophomores embarked on the annual CDS college trip November 11-14, visiting six schools of higher education in the Southeast. This trip is a significant and valued annual experience for Carolina Day School sophomores—one that greatly anticipated each year, and one that makes a big difference for students as they begin to think about the type of colleges they want to consider.

The Carolina Day School community gathered on campus to celebrate CDS swimmer Madeleine Bauer '19, who has signed with University of Michigan. As a swimmer for Carolina Day, Madeleine has been named to numerous all-conference teams, all-WNC swim teams, and has celebrated on the podium at Carolina Day's NCISAA Swim Championships.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, the weather may have been cold and rainy, but hearts were warm, as Carolina Day School students gathered on Jon Kraus Way with partner schools Asheville Christian Academy, Christ School, and the Franklin School of Innovation to celebrate the start of this year's Habitat for Humanity Student Build. The Truss Signing Celebration also recognized the partner family, Kerri Colloso and her family, who will move into the house when it is completed.

The Theater Department at Carolina Day School has much to celebrate, as they bring home honors from both the 2018 NCTC High School Play Festival, held at Gardner Webb University on November 2–3, 2018, and from the NCTC State High School Play Festival held at Greensboro College on November 15-16, 2018. The theater program, led by David Dvorscak, made the school and community proud with their presentations of "The Luxury of Silence" at the Festivals.

Brutal course conditions in Hendersonville couldn't stop the Carolina Day girls cross country team from taking home the NCISAA title on Friday, October 26, 2018. This win wrapped up the girls team's fifth consecutive state championship, and the Wildcat's 15th NCISAA victory in the last 25 years.

On Thursday, April 26, Carolina Day upper school students participated in Arts Day workshops led by their peers and upper school faculty. With Art Workshops in the morning, a Gallery Opening at lunch, and a Showcase of Talent in the afternoon, Upper School Arts Day is a day in which students can explore new talents and push themselves artistically while gaining new skills.

For the past decade, Lycée Notre Dame in Dijon and Carolina Day School have fostered an exchange program between the two schools. On odd years, Carolina Day School students go to France, and on even years, the French students come here. Recently, the French students visited Carolina Day, this being the tenth year of the exchange program—the year in which the Lycée Notre Dame students come to Asheville.

Carolina Day School juniors Sarah Holt and Hannah Matin have been accepted into the Governor's School of North Carolina, the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation.

On Thursday, April 19, Carolina Day was host to HiTeck Tennis, a robot competition in which two robots compete against one another for the high score. Teams from Valley Springs Middle, TC Roberson High, and Carolina Day School competed.

This winter, after just over three years of practice, Solomon garnered honors at the National Field Archery Association's (NFAA) annual competition in Las Vegas and the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) State Championship held in Tennessee. Solomon took 6th place in Young Adult Male Recurve at the Vegas Shoot in February and 1st place-Guest, Cadet Male Recurve, in the USA Archery/JOAD TN State Championship on January 20, 2018.

On November 9 and 16, the Carolina Day School Theatre One-Act class will present "A Good Man's Job," a one-act play written by Zoë Eshan '18 and performed by the students of the Theatre One-Act class. The performance is directed and designed by David Dvorscak, with costumes by Nitara Kittles '18.

Upper School students are raising trout from eggs to fingerlings and then release them into approved cold-water streams and lakes.
