Carolina Day School's Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) team had a great showing at the 2019 state finals this weekend at East Carolina University in Greenville, earning a third-place finish in their division. The CDS team is comprised of Grade 5 students Amelia Lopez, Ellie Dukowicz, Harriet Esselstyn, Jackson Israel, Mac Copenhaver, Owen Smith, and Samantha Schenker. Coaches for the team are Ian Riddell and Shana Lopez.

The Asheville Mini-Maker Faire was held on Saturday, April 6, on the campus of UNCA and was an opportunity for makers (crafters, inventors, programmers and more) to share their ideas and gain inspiration from one another. The Carolina Day School brought our wind tunnel with us and encouraged some of the youngest attendees to design and build something out of recycled materials.

In commemoration of the living legacy of Dr. King, CDS will host our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration with activities in each of our divisions. In addition, CDS students, faculty and staff, and community members will take part in Asheville-area events organized by the MLK Association of Asheville & Buncombe County.

This year's Book Fair, organized by the Parent Association's Friends of the Library, was a resounding success! The Library Book Fair is an annual tradition which supports the school's book clubs, guest authors, and the Caldecott and Newbery Awards.

The Carolina Day School Creative Writers Club, a start-up idea conceived by a CDS Grade 5 student and her father, recently hosted author Amy Cherrix for a casual conversation about the process of writing. Amy Cherrix writes non-fiction for middle-grade readers.

Last year, Carolina Day School students worked with Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society and Wilde Acre Landscape to create a bird and pollinator-friendly garden. CDS Lower School Assistant Principal Peter Sullivan shared the story of how this garden has beautified the Carolina Day School campus and has transformed the space into an outdoor classroom, offering cross-curricular opportunities for learning.

What a night! Nash Athletic Center was full of love on Saturday night as we celebrated and supported financial assistance at Carolina Day. On Friday, August 25, nationally acclaimed hiker, Jennifer Pharr Davis, gave an inspirational talk to CDS students in middle and lower school about her legendary record-breaking hike on the Appalachian Trail. Her visit to CDS kicked off a new school-wide initiative of outdoor exploration.

In STEM class, students used their knowledge of angles to have a fun, hands-on challenge. The students built a foam rocket, added fins and a rubber band, and then they used a meter stick to launch their rockets.
