Carolina Day School's Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) team had a great showing at the 2019 state finals this weekend at East Carolina University in Greenville, earning a third-place finish in their division. The CDS team is comprised of Grade 5 students Amelia Lopez, Ellie Dukowicz, Harriet Esselstyn, Jackson Israel, Mac Copenhaver, Owen Smith, and Samantha Schenker. Coaches for the team are Ian Riddell and Shana Lopez.

In commemoration of the living legacy of Dr. King, CDS will host our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration with activities in each of our divisions. In addition, CDS students, faculty and staff, and community members will take part in Asheville-area events organized by the MLK Association of Asheville & Buncombe County.

Carolina Day School (CDS) announced that, after a national search, Dr. John Daves will become the new principal of its upper school for grades 9-12. Daves, who will join CDS on July 1, 2019, succeeds Peggy Daniels, retiring at the end of the 2018-19 academic year after 34 years in education.

During the last week of November, Carolina Day School was proud to be able to send faculty and staff—and for the first time, students—to the National Association of Independent Schools' (NAIS) Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) and the People of Color Conference (PoCC), held this year in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mrs. Sims first led Carolina Day School seniors on the CDS Canterbury Pilgrimage in 1993, and the event has since become one of the most anticipated traditions for students.

Grade 4 teacher Jan Brabham has been invited to be a fellow at the Project Zero Classroom (PZC) Fellows Program, July 16-20, at Harvard's Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass. Educators attending this program will spend the week studying and networking with top professionals in education.

Carolina Day School Lower School Technology Coordinator Libby Roland has been named Odyssey of the Mind Coach of the Year for the Western Region. The Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.

Carolina Day School first grade teacher, Alicia Cardina, spent her spring break volunteering at a school in Punta Gorda, Belize. As the recipient of the 2015 Lynn Waple Award, Alicia spearheaded a project to travel to Belize and connect the children of Carolina Day School with students at Little Flower School in a meaningful, purposeful, and intentional project.
