Upper School Admission Process

Applying to Grades 9 - 11

Let's Get Started

Upper School Campus Visit

For families who live in the Asheville area, we schedule Upper School parent and student visits on most Mondays and Thursdays from September through January. Visit days start at 8 a.m. and end at 1:35 p.m. for students. Parent visits include an opportunity to meet with us and tour the school; you should allot 1 hour, 15 minutes. If you are relocating, we will work with you to schedule your visit at your convenience.

Students applying for Grade 9 will visit freshman classes; all other applicants will visit the classes of their peers. During their visit, students will meet with a faculty member for a conversation and will provide a writing sample.*

Be sure to fill out the online Contact and Emergency Information Form prior to your visit.

*Parents of students who receive accommodations should inform us when they schedule their visits.

Visits must occur by:
November 15 for a Winter Decision

February 1 for a Spring Decision

Parent Perspective

We ask you to submit a Parent Perspective online as a way for you to reflect on your own education, your child as a learner, and how you imagine your child might thrive here at CDS. If applying for more than one child, feel free to copy/paste anything that applies to your other children. If more than one parent would like to submit a response, feel free to upload as Supplemental Information a word document or PDF to each child’s portal page or email it to us at enrollment@carolinaday.org with your child’s name on the page.

Recommendations and Records Release Form

Through the portal, you will be able to invite your student’s English and Math teachers to access our Teacher Recommendation Form. The teachers will submit them directly to us online through the portal. You may also choose to submit a third (optional) Recommendation Form from someone else (a coach, a teacher in another subject area, a tutor, or youth leader, etc.) who knows your child well and can provide an additional perspective. (Please note that you invite this recommender in the Optional Steps section of your checklist.)

Please download the Records Release Form available on the portal and give it to your school so they can provide us with your child’s official school reports for the 2016-17 school year and the year-to-date.*

Official transcripts must come directly from the school and are treated as confidential.

*For students who would have difficulty in requesting an official school report before receiving a decision from CDS, we will accept an unofficial school report with the expectation that if accepted at CDS, the student will then request an official report.

February 1 for a Spring Decision

All applicants to Grades 9-11 must take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT), a standardized test that “measures the basic verbal, math, and reading skills students need for successful performance in independent schools.”*

Please register online directly with SSAT [www.ssat.org]. Please note that there are registration deadlines and late registration fees, so we urge you to schedule a test date early. To avoid delays, please indicate as you register that test scores should be sent directly to Carolina Day School, using code 2100.

For a Winter Decision, we accept the October or November test dates.

For a Spring Decision, we accept either of those two test dates as well as the December or January test dates.

*If a student has previously taken nationally standardized tests (such as the PSAT, SAT or ACT), please contact our Admission Team before registering for the SSAT.
