AUGUST 15, 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I wish that each of you could have been a fly on the wall during the four days of Responsive Classroom training that took place in the past two weeks for teachers and assistants new to the Lower School and for all Key Lower School teachers. The power of this approach is the skillful integration of developmentally responsive teaching, effective management techniques, engaging academic lessons, and the creation of a positive community among students and teachers. Some of the topics covered included: Interactive modeling of classroom routines and procedures to support students' acclimation to a new school year; creating engaging and joyful classrooms through Morning Meetings and energizers; and an approach to discipline that emphasizes logical consequences. We are so fortunate that fifth-grade teacher Alicia Cardina is a Consulting Teacher for the Center for Responsive Schools. She leads trainings in schools all over the country, and right here at home as well! IMPORTANT DATES AUG 20 Optional Parent Conferences and Open House

ITEMS TO BRING FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Please label all items with your child's name!!!
You are welcome to bring all of these items to a parent conference or the Open House on Tuesday, August 20. PHONE COMMUNICATIONS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY We ask all parents to call the reception desk, 274-0757, if you need to get a message to your child's teacher during the school day. Texting the teacher interrupts their focus on their students and their teaching, and for this reason, the lower-school faculty will not be able to respond to texts until after school. STEM In order to integrate the subjects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) more fully, the lower-school faculty has made the decision to restructure the co-curricular schedule, allowing STEM teacher Ian Riddell to co-teach with all grade-level teachers. Mr. Riddell will work with students on science units, and also with teachers in the planning and implementation of our science program. Over the course of the year, this will almost double Ian's contact hours with students, and it will enrich their experiences in science, social studies, and math units. It will expand, enhance, and integrate the STEM experience for every grade level.
