Michael Lemon joined Carolina Day School in 2018. He serves as the social studies department chair and debate coach and teaches AP world history, honors economics, and debate. He previously worked at the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans where he taught AP world history and AP economics, served as a grade dean, head golf coach, and director of the jazz and rock bands, and received the Stephen B. Lemann Faculty Award. He also previously worked at Christ School where he taught Spanish and participated with the jazz band and outdoor programs.
Michael's teaching methodology in history centers on rigorous critical analysis of source material. His classes focus on creating opportunities for students to authentically engage in historical and historiographical debates that are at the heart of the discipline. He says that his favorite thing about teaching at Carolina Day is the commitment to student-centered learning on the part of the faculty and the school. He shared that he is excited to work at a school that is committed to thoughtful and intentional discussions about pedagogy and craft.
Michael is an avid road cyclist, mountain biker, and hiker and was thrilled to return to Asheville with his wife, Meredith, and his son, Chandler, after 8 years away.
