Congratulations to CDS senior Erin Hovendon on being awarded a National Merit® $2500 Scholarship. She is one of 2,500 Merit Scholar designees chosen from a talent pool of approximately 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Having placed first at the Odyssey of the Mind (OM) regional competitions on April 12 at McDowell High School, all six CDS teams competed at the State level at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee on Saturday, April 2. One CDS team placed first at State, qualifying them to advance to the World Finals which takes place May 25-28 at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

The Board of Directors of Horizons at Carolina Day is pleased to announce that Jennifer Lyons Tracy has been named Executive Director.

Beginning March 3, Carolina Day School will move to voluntary masking for all students, faculty and staff.

The Theatre Department at Carolina Day School is celebrating their newest theatre production presented by the 2021 One-Act class, an original physical theatre piece called “Now What Question Mark.” The class performed the piece for the first time at the North Carolina Theatre Conference One-Act Festival, earning incredible accolades.

The Book Fair is happening November 1–5, 2021 in the Lower School! The Friends of the Library have created a CDS Book Fair homepage where you can find shopping schedules, sign up for volunteer opportunities, and sign up for eWallet. Every purchase from the Book Fair helps support our school.

Carolina Day Speech and Debate have had very successful outings in their first two tournaments of the year, the Jimmy K. Poole Viking Classic, hosted by North Mecklenburg High School on Saturday, October 9; and the Bob Jones Academy Speech and Debate Invitational on Saturday, October 16.

Dramatic enhancements are coming to Sgro Athletic Complex as CDS prepares to launch public-private partnership with Asheville Parks & Recreation for improvements to Sgro and community use of facilities.

During these extraordinary times, more and more Asheville-area residents are spending time in the great outdoors, often in public parks and recreational facilities. Today, the City of Asheville and Carolina Day School (CDS) announce two exciting initiatives that will positively impact the Asheville community: the purchase of land by the City of Asheville for a much-needed public park space, and the exploration of a partnership that will create opportunities for community use of the school’s athletic complex.

Carolina Day School student Erin Hovendon ’22 has been named as a Semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, and Greyson Henry ’22 received recognition as a Commended Student.

This year’s Habitat Student Build—a home for a family of seven—is sponsored by six local schools. Upper School students have been raising the funds to help build this home and will soon begin construction. 

When Carolina Day School students arrive on campus for the 2021-2022 school year, they’ll be welcomed by an attractive new front entrance sign. But the true beauty is that the design was inspired by a student, and—in true Wildcat spirit—gifted to the school by generous parent donors.

Carolina Day School has taken an additional significant step in reducing its carbon footprint and energy costs by expanding the school’s existing solar system this summer. In June, additional solar panels were installed on the Lower School and Nash Athletic Center, expanding Carolina Day’s existing solar system that began with the installation of solar panels on the Upper School two years ago. 

Carolina Day is pleased to announce that Erin Hovendon '22 and the 2021 Girls Cross Country Team have received notification from the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club that they will be considered for awards on August 15, 2021 at the 59th WNC Sports Awards Banquet.

Today we join the family of Charles D. Owen Jr. (Charlie) and countless other individuals and institutions in Western North Carolina to mourn his loss and celebrate his life. A cornerstone community member, benefactor, and leader in our region, Mr. Owen has been directly involved with our school for 80 years. He was an alumnus of Asheville Country Day School, and he was an ACDS parent, Trustee, CDS benefactor, grandparent, and Regents Council member.
