MariaElena Norton ’21, Westray Keeler ’21, and Julia Matin ’21 recognized as Commended Students
Carolina Day School student Lia Sprouse ’21 has been named as a Semifinalist in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring students in each state on the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which they took as juniors. As a Semifinalist, Lia is now eligible to continue in the competition for scholarships and designation as a Merit Scholar®. Finalists will be notified in February 2021, and winners will be announced between April and July 2021.
Lia joined CDS as a junior and quickly became an engaged member of the CDS community, joining the cross country and track teams, and serving in an elected position on the Honor Council as a senior. Lia is actively involved in volunteer work in the community, and she also plays the violin, participating as a member of the Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra. While she excels in all academic areas, Lia is particularly fond of science.
“I try to do my best with everything I commit to,” said Lia. “I really love studying science, specifically chemistry. I took two years of chemistry in the classroom and now have a lab-focused independent study in the subject, so it's been really fun to develop my knowledge and understanding over the years of something that always came really naturally to me.”
Lia recently participated in an internship with Mission Hospital to explore health-related professions. When asked about her future plans, she said, “I want to major in chemistry on a pre-med track and eventually become a physician.“
MariaElena Norton ’21, Westray Keeler ’21, and Julia Matin ’21 received recognition as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students are eligible for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
