Erin Hovendon named National Merit Scholar

Congratulations to CDS senior Erin Hovendon on being awarded a National Merit® $2500 Scholarship. She is one of 2,500 Merit Scholar designees chosen from a talent pool of approximately 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

An accomplished scholar and student-athlete, Erin recently announced her intention to sign with The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts to run track and cross country in the fall, with plans to study chemical or environmental engineering and Spanish. On Monday, the school community will gather to celebrate her signing.

“One thing I really valued in my college search was strong student/teacher relationships, because that’s something that I’ve gotten at Carolina Day,” said Hovendon in a recent video profile about her CDS experience. (Watch that video [link to video])

"I’m looking forward to using the time management and self-advocacy skills I’ve learned at Carolina Day within the larger MIT environment, and I can’t wait to get involved in hands-on scientific research as soon as possible.”

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
