CDS announces Elizabeth Garland as Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Carolina Day School announces the appointment of Elizabeth Garland as the new Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, beginning July 1, 2021. This position will report directly to the Head of School and will lead, coordinate, and support the school's diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work as set forth in Carolina Day's mission and core beliefs. 

Garland is an alumna of Carolina Day and has worked at the school since 2015. She currently serves as the director of Community Engagement & Alumni Relations working within the Advancement Office, while also helping to lead the school's diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in a part-time capacity. 

"I am dedicated to creating spaces that intertwine healing, personal experiences, perspectives, and identities," said Garland. "Combining this passion with my leadership experience, I will work towards developing equitable, multi-platform educational programs and strive to build on my extensive knowledge and practice of progressive pedagogy."

As an alumna of Carolina Day, she is able to draw upon deep connections to ensure that we are moving boldly ahead on our quest to deliver excellence at every turn. I'm very excited to announce Elizabeth's appointment to this critical role."

Garland serves as an affinity group leader with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) People of Color Conference. She has also been a facilitator with the National SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project and with Building Bridges of Asheville. Garland serves on the Board of Asheville Writers in Schools and Asheville FM, is a mentor for Word on the Street/ Voz de les Jóvenes, and is in the process of creating a city-wide Black Student Union in collaboration with the YMI Cultural Center. 

Garland holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications, Broadcasting from Western Carolina University.
