Carolina Day School

Position Statement: Principal of Carolina Day’s Key School

About Carolina Day’s Key School:

For over 27 years, Carolina Day’s Key School division has profoundly changed the lives and learning of students with language-based learning differences like dyslexia. Launched in 1997 with two students, the Key School now averages approximately 100 students in grades 2-8 each year, with roughly 25 faculty and staff members supporting the division.

The expertise of the Key School faculty has informed and strengthened our educational approach for all CDS students. The application of the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is an explicit, multisensory, sequential way to teach literacy, is proven to be also highly effective for neurotypical learners. The integration of Key School methodology, teachers, and students into other divisions has enabled CDS to become more fluent and fluid in neurodiversity and adaptable, responsive teaching and learning in general. CDS is now one of the few seasoned veteran and leader schools in neurodiversity, differentiated learning, and responsive classrooms across our four divisions.
