Charley Rice Thompson began working at Carolina Day School in 2013 as part of the Lower School faculty and has now moved up the hill to the Middle School! Charley is an alumna of Greensboro Day School (NC) and The University of the South (Sewanee, TN). She worked in software marketing and PR before her family's business, The Orchard Inn, drew her to the mountains of NC. Before coming to CDS, Charley taught in the public school system while earning her Master’s Degree in Education.

Get to know Charley Thompson:

In what ways can you teach/engage children at CDS that you couldn't at other schools? “It is exciting to begin work in a community that is on the cutting edge of education. As a new faculty member, I am impressed to see that CDS is having the same conversations about innovation and creativity that my classmates, professors, and I had in my Master's program.”

What do you like most about your job at CDS? “It is inspiring to work in a teaching environment that is moving forward and making positive changes.”

In your opinion, how does the CDS community inspire students to be courageous and curious, wonder about things that they don’t understand, try new things, and develop individual passions? “I love the attitude at CDS that embraces individual growth, unique gifts, and differentiation. It enables children to put their best selves forward, which makes our overall education experience one where diversity is not just accepted, but appreciated.”

What books and authors inspire you? The Book Whisperer really spoke to me as an educator. It is inspiring and underscored my beliefs that reading empowers children by opening and stimulating their minds. We can learn a lot from children who read!”

What is your favorite quote about education, mentorship, children, and/or learning? “The more you read, the more you know. The more you learn, the more places you will go!" Dr. Seuss

Which classroom projects/events are you known for? “I love travel because of the history and geography lessons that come with it. Our world is becoming more and more borderless, and we have much to learn from other cultures through the strengthening of our technology and communication skills.”

What personal passion brings balance to your life? “My daughters, Cecelia and Claire, are my pride, and my husband. I love spending time with them and our dog, Sam, hiking and camping by the mountain rivers.”
