Grade 5 students recently completed reading a collection of short stories, entitled, "Every Living Thing" by Cynthia Rylant. Students explored how in each story a character transformed and moved through a significant life challenge. More specifically, the transformation occurred with the help or presence of an animal. With these stories as our model, they worked in a writer's workshop to create their own short story in which a character changed and overcame a struggle with the influence of an animal. After brainstorming, drafting, several edits, and peer conferencing the students produced their contribution to our class collection of short stories, "An Animal's Purpose."
